Lily bumps into George on a stroll. George is desperate for an excuse to leave his marriage and begs Lily to testify that Bertha did indeed cheat on him. Lily is super tempted, especially thinking about the letters to Seldon, but still refuses. When Lily got back to the Gormers house, Mrs Gormer mentions that Bertha visited. Lily knew that Bertha would only visit with an agenda, and she realizes that Bertha is trying to rid Lily of the few friends she had because if Mrs Gormer becomes Bertha's friend, she would be forced to leave Lily behind. Lily goes back to the city and finds herself a hotel, but realizes that based on her finances, she has to marry Rosedale and fast. George visits again, but Lily still refuses to admit anything about Bertha's affair.
