Lily decides to walk with Selden and
not Percy, so she makes up some excuse about a headache or something.
On their walk, they flirt a little, but then get to really deep
talking. They talk about what success means, and their answers really
described who they are as a character. Lily says success is getting
the most out of life. Selden says success is personal freedom. Lily
says she only finds personal freedom around Selden, and Selden agrees
that it would be hard to find if she marries a rich man. Lily
reflects on whether she loves Selden or not, and they both talk about
what if the two of them married. Selden knew he couldn't offer her
anything in comparison to all the rich men, but he would if he could.
They both agree that if they married, Lily would not be able to
continue her lavish lifestyle, which she would not like, so they drop
it and begin to walk back.
