Chapter 9

Lily is back with her aunt. She passes a rude charwoman on the stairs, who turns out to be the same rude charwoman from the Bendick when Lily visited Selden. Later on, that charwoman comes to the door with a package of sorts wrapped in newspaper. In the package is love letters from Bertha to Seldon, that were just slightly ripped up. The charwoman wants to sell them to Lily because she thinks they are from her. They are not from her (obviously), but Lily buys them anyway so they don't get into the wrong hands, for Selden's sake. She buys them without any intentions to use them in any evil way, even though it would help her seen as Bertha screwed her over. Mrs. Peniton (Lily's aunt) comes home then and starts talking about the wedding again, and then about Percy's engagement to Evie. She mentions that Bertha had helped arrange it, which made Lily mad again and decides to not burn the letters as she was thinking, but keep them just in case they come in handy.
